History: Australian Doctors International Inc. was founded by former Manly Mayor and General Practitioner, Dr. Peter Macdonald in 2000.
After a field trip to the Fly River area of Western Province of Papua New Guinea, Dr. Macdonald found there was a compelling need for medical and health services for both the local population and refugees from West Papua.
A partnership was formed with the Catholic Diocese of Daru-Kiunga to help support their health network and services. Read a testimony about ADI by the Diocese's Bishop Gilles Côté here.
Since 2002, ADI has deployed 22 volunteer doctors on 28 assignments to North Fly and Middle Fly Districts in Western Province. Learn more about ADI's doctor deployment program here.
In 2003 ADI began delivering mosquito bed nets to remote villages to help fight malaria, and in 2004 switched to the newly-available long-life insecticide impregnated bed nets. Since then more than 50,000 bed nets have been distributed. Learn more here.
In 2004 ADI started its Mass Drug Administration program for the elimination of filariasis in the high prevalence area of Nomad-Mougulu. Five of six annual rounds have been completed. Learn more here.
In 2008 ADI committed to caring for an isolated group of leprosy patients spread over three villages of Middle Fly District. This program includes distributing medicine and advocating on behalf of patients. Learn more here.
In 2009 ADI sponsored 29 live and 29 repeat talkback radio segments aimed at changing behaviours and towards HIV/AIDS in local communities. Learn more here.
ADI is a non-profit, non-government medical aid organisation run by volunteers. It has no religious or political affiliations.
ADI is a signatory to the Australian Council for International Development Code of Conduct and approved by AusAID.
