Dr Charlene has known for many years that she wanted to use her medical training to help people in developing regions. She was just waiting for the right opportunity.
“I like the ADI mission. We are not in PNG just to do our thing and then leave. We are there to work with local health authorities to upskill health workers in PNG so that communities have health care long after volunteer Australian doctors have left.”
Dr Charlene was deployed in West New Britain in PNG providing support to local health care workers and improving the health of rural and remote communities until she was urgently recalled in response to the COVID-19 crisis. She was our first ADI doctor in this new service region!
