WOMEN’S HEALTH AND WELLBEING

ADI works with Provincial Health Authorities (PHAs), faith-based and private health providers, local health facilities and health workers to ensure that our programs are integrated and sustainable. Our programs are aligned with the PNG National Department of Health Key Result Areas (KRAs), and with our collaborators we are working towards the betterment of essential health and social services for women in PNG.

WOMEN’S HEALTH IN PNG

Women in PNG face many barriers to enjoying good health and wellbeing. Restricted gender norms inhibit many women's access to already under-resourced health services in rural and remote areas. Many women are not able to access family planning services and often give birth at home unsupervised. Sexual and physical violence is also a prevalent issue faced by women in PNG.

ADI seeks to improve women’s health and wellbeing through engagement with local communities, rural health workers and community leaders to design relevant approaches to:

Engage with communities
around gender inequity
and the importance of reproductive rights for women

Understand
and
debunk myths

Identify and address local barriers to health service access

Seek to understand and
improve difficulties experienced
by women with disabilities

ADI’s work is focused on clinical training of rural health workers to improve maternal health outcomes and reduce maternal mortality.

Our clinical training aims to improve competencies in:

  • essential maternal care including emergency obstetric responses

  • counselling and communication techniques so health workers can confidently discuss contraceptive options with women

  • technical skills and knowledge to improve access to contraceptive options for rural women
